THE PART IS LOCATED NEXT TO THE ENGINE AND IS DRIVEN BY THE MECHANICAL ENERGY OF THE ENGINE. THE PART COMPRISES A 12 VOLT AC GENERATOR MADE OF BASE METAL, HOUSED IN AN ALUMINIUM BRACKET. AN AC GENERATOR IS GENERALLY KNOWN AS AN ALTERNATOR. IT IS DESIGNED TO CONVERT THE MECHANICAL ENERGY OF THE ENGINE INTO ALTERNATING CURRENT 9AC0 ELECTRICAL ENERY. THE PART COMPRISES A ROTATING MAGNET OR ROTOR WHICH IS DRIVEN BY THE ENGINE 9VIA THE TIMER CHAIN). THE ROTOR ROTATES WITHIN A COIL OF STATIONARY CONDUCTORS KNOWN AS THE STATOR. WHEN THE ,AGNETIC FIELD OF THE RPTOR CUTS ACROSS THE STATOR, THSI INDUCES AN ELECTRICAL CURRENT IN THE STATOR WINDINGS. THE ELECTRICITY PRODUCRD BY THE AC GENERATOR IS USED TO POWER THE ELCTRICAL SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE AND TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY FOR THE STARTER MOTOR.
