A PLC (PLANAR LIGHTWAVE CIRCUIT) SPLITTER IS USED TO SEND THE SIGNAL FROM THE CENTRAL OFFICE TO OFFICE/HOMES IN A PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORK (PON). THIS IS A SYSTEM THAT BRINGS OPTICAL FIBRE CABLING AND SIGNALS ALL OR MOST OF THE WAY TO THE END USER, DEPENDING ON WHERE THE PON TERMINATES. WITHIN THE PON ENVIRONMENT A SIGNAL NEEDS TO BE DISTRIBUTED OR SPLIT INTO NODES, ADJOINING NETWORKS, CENTRAL OFFICES AND SUBSCRIBERS. A SPLITTER IS A PASSIVE NETWORK DEVICE USED TO DIVIDE ONE INCOMING SIGNAL INTO MULTIPLE SIGNALS WITHIN THIS NETWORK. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY USING WAVE LENGTH GUIDE TECHNOLOGY TO SPLIT THE OPTICAL POWER AMONG SEVERAL OUTPUT FIBRES. A PASSIVE OPTICAL SPLITTER IS NOT ELECTRICALLY POWERED BUT HAS INTEGRATED PLANNER WAVE GUIDE TECHNOLOGY TO DIVIDE SIGNAL POWER. SPLITTERS INDUCE HIGH ATTENUATION.
