PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT. THIS IS A PRODUCT DERIVED FROM THE PROCESSING OF PALM OIL, WHEREBY FRUIT IS STEAMED AND PALM OIL IS EXTRACTED. A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF OIL IS DISCARDED ALONG WITH SOME WATER FROM THE STEAMING, AND THIS IS PUMPED TO EFFLUENT PONDS. THE PONDS ARE LEFT FOR A PERIOD OF TIME TO ALLOW THE OIL DISCARDED DURING THE STEAMING PROCESS TO RISE TO THE TOP. THE OIL ON THE TOP IS THEN SKIMMED AND PUT IN SETTLING TANKS WHEREUPON THE TANKS ARE HEATED TO 70 DEGREES CELCIUS IN ORDER TO REMOVE MOISTURE AND IMPURITIES. THE RESULTING PALM OIL COMPRISES ABOUT 97% CRUDE PALM OIL AND 3% WATER WITH A FREE FATTY ACID CONTENT OF ABOUT 40%. ONCE IMPORTED, THE PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT WILL BE USED TO MAKE BIODIESEL.
