AN ASSEMBLY CONSISTING OF A PNEUMATIC ACTUATOR, A BUTTERFLY VALVE , A ROD AND A SPINDLE. THE ASSEMBLY IS WELDED IN TO AUTOMOTIVE EXHAUST SYSTEMS AND IS USED TO CONTROL THE FLOW OF EXHAUST GASSES. WHEN A VACCUUM IS APPLIED TO THE ACTUATOR, THE ROD IS PULLED INSIDE AGAINST A SPRING. THE ROD IS ATTACHED TO A LEVER, WHICH IN TURN IS CONNECTED TO THE SPINDLE IN THE VALVE. AS THE ROD RETRACTS INSIDE THE ACTUATOR THE LEVER AND SPINDLE ROTATE. A BUTTERFLY VALVE IS ATTACHED TO THE SPINDLE WHICH CLOSES THE VALVE AS VACUUM IS APPLIED TO THE ACTUATOR. WHEN THE VACUUM IS 'RELEASED' THE SPRING INSIDE THE ACTUATOR PUSHES THE ROD OUT AND THE VALVE OPENS.
