DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded)
Incoterm whereby the seller delivers the goods once unloaded from the arriving means of transport at the named destination. The only Incoterm requiring the seller to unload.
Definition and Specificity
DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded) is the only Incoterms 2020 rule that requires the seller to unload the goods at destination. It replaced DAT (Delivered at Terminal) from Incoterms 2010, with a key difference: the delivery place is no longer limited to a terminal but can be any agreed place.
Change from DAT
The transition from DAT to DPU in Incoterms 2020 clarifies that delivery can occur at any place, not just a terminal (port, airport, warehouse). This provides greater flexibility to the parties.
Seller's Obligations
- Contract for carriage to the place of destination
- Clear the goods for export
- Bear all risks until unloading at the place of destination
- Unload the goods from the arriving means of transport
Transfer of Risks
Risk passes from seller to buyer once the goods are unloaded at the named place of destination. This is the fundamental difference from DAP, where risk passes before unloading.
Precautions
The seller must ensure they can organise unloading at the agreed destination. If the seller cannot guarantee unloading (no access to equipment, local regulations), it is preferable to use DAP.
