FAS (Free Alongside Ship)
Maritime Incoterm whereby the seller delivers the goods alongside the vessel nominated by the buyer at the named port of shipment.
Definition and Principle
FAS (Free Alongside Ship) is an Incoterm exclusively for sea or inland waterway transport. The seller delivers the goods by placing them alongside the vessel (on the quay or in lighters) at the named port of shipment. The seller clears the goods for export.
Transfer of Risks and Costs
Risk and costs pass from seller to buyer when the goods are placed alongside the vessel at the port of shipment. From that point, the buyer bears all risks and costs, including loading on board.
Respective Obligations
Seller:
- Deliver the goods alongside the vessel at the named port
- Clear the goods for export
- Provide proof of delivery
Buyer:
- Nominate the vessel and communicate the vessel name, loading point and delivery date
- Contract and pay for sea freight
- Bear loading costs onto the vessel
Practical Usage
FAS is primarily used for bulk cargo (ores, grain, petroleum products) or heavy goods loaded directly alongside the vessel. It is not suitable for containerised transport, for which FCA is preferable.
