How to classify NMC vs LFP batteries under new CN 2026—what changed?

Hey all,

I'm in charge of imports at a mid-size electronics assembly company here in Sydney, and we’re bringing in lithium batteries from Shenzhen — mainly NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) and also some LFP (lithium iron phosphate). We used to just classify them under the old CN codes, but my broker just flagged that the CN 2026 update has shuffled some battery codes around, especially for these newer chemistries. I’m not super comfortable with the new Combined Nomenclature stuff—how do we figure out if NMC and LFP are treated differently now? Are there actual notes in the 2026 CN or anywhere that tell you where to put these kinds of batteries?

Also do we need to go by the cell type or the battery pack? For us, sometimes it’s individual cells, sometimes fully assembled packs that go into medical devices (EXW Shenzhen, import into Rotterdam then to AU). Anyone already dealing with classifying NMC or LFP under the new CN structure and can share how you’re handling it for customs clearance? Honestly just after something basic, like what section/chapter we should even be looking in now and how strict customs are if you pick one over the other.
