FCL (Full Container Load)
Maritime shipping mode in which a shipper books an entire container for their own goods, regardless of the quantity loaded.
Definition
FCL (Full Container Load) is a maritime shipping mode in which an entire container is booked and used by a single shipper. Goods are stuffed (loaded) into the container at the shipper's premises and unstuffed at the consignee's, without intermediate handling of the contents.
Advantages of FCL
- Security: goods are not handled between loading and delivery
- Speed: no consolidation/deconsolidation time at the CFS
- Economy: for sufficient volumes, the cost per unit is lower than LCL
- Documentary simplicity: a single B/L for the entire shipment
- Flexibility: the shipper controls stuffing and space optimisation
When to choose FCL
FCL is recommended when:
- The volume of goods exceeds approximately 15 m³ (approximate breakeven threshold)
- Goods are fragile or require careful stuffing
- Timelines are tight (no consolidation time)
- Goods require a special container (reefer, open top, flat rack)
Practical points
- The shipper is responsible for stuffing and must comply with blocking and bracing rules (CTU Code)
- VGM (Verified Gross Mass) must be declared before loading onto the vessel (SOLAS)
- Demurrage and detention charges apply if the container is not returned within the free time
