Digital Product Passport (DPP)
An EU digital tool providing detailed information on a product's sustainability, composition and circularity throughout its lifecycle.
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is an EU regulatory tool introduced by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, 2024/1781). It provides a structured set of data about a product, accessible via a data carrier (QR code, RFID, NFC).
Information contained in the DPP:
- Identification: unique product identifier, manufacturer, place of manufacture
- Composition: materials used, substances of concern
- Environmental footprint: carbon footprint, embodied energy, water use
- Durability: expected lifespan, repairability, spare parts availability
- End of life: disassembly instructions, recyclability, recycled content
- Regulatory compliance: declarations of conformity, certifications
The first products covered will be batteries (from February 2027), then progressively textiles, electronics, furniture, and potentially all regulated products.
For importers, the DPP requires collecting and transmitting detailed data from their suppliers across the entire supply chain. The DPP will be interoperable at European level via a decentralised registry.
