AES (Automated Export System)
The EU IT system managing export declarations and controlling the actual exit of goods from the EU customs territory.
The AES (Automated Export System) is the IT system used in the EU for the electronic management of export procedures. It enables the filing, processing and tracking of export declarations, as well as control of the actual exit of goods.
How AES works:
- The exporter or their representative files an electronic export declaration at the customs office of export
- The export office verifies the declaration, conducts any necessary controls and authorises release (EAD - Export Accompanying Document)
- Goods are presented at the office of exit (EU border)
- The office of exit confirms actual exit (exit results message)
- The exporter receives the certification of exit, required for VAT exemption
AES also manages:
- Export controls: dual-use goods, embargoed products
- Electronic export licences
- Proof of exit for VAT exemption justification
The system is interconnected with national customs systems (DELTA in France, ATLAS in Germany) and other trans-European systems (NCTS, ICS2).
