Air Transport Letter (LTA / AWB)
The Air Waybill (Air Waybill — AWB) is the transport document used for air freight. Unlike the maritime bill of lading, it is not a title deed.
Functions
The LTA serves as proof of contract of carriage, receipt of goods by the airline, customs document, proof of insurance and guide for handling.
Types
- MAWB (Master Air Waybill): issued by the airline to the freight forwarder
- HAWB (House Air Waybill): issued by the forwarder to the shipper
Non-negotiable
Unlike the sea bill of lading, the LTA is not negotiable. The goods are delivered to the recipient indicated on the document.
