Chargeable weight
Weight used to calculate freight, whichever is greater of actual weight and dimensional weight.
Chargeable Weight
The taxable weight is the weight used to calculate transport freight. It corresponds to the greater of the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight of the merchandise.
Calculation of volumetric weight
- Air freight: Length x Width x Height (cm) / 6,000 = volumetric weight (kg)
- LCL sea freight: 1 m³ = 1 ton (1,000 kg)
- Road transport: varies depending on the carrier (often 1 m³ = 333 kg)
Why volumetric weight?
Carriers must make the most of space and weight. Light but bulky goods would be underpriced by actual weight. Volumetric weight corrects this imbalance.
Optimization
Reduce the volume of packaging, optimize the filling of packages and choose the mode of transport best suited to the weight/volume ratio.
