Dangerous Goods
Dangerous goods are products or substances presenting a risk to health, safety, property or the environment during their transport. They are classified into 9 danger classes by the UN.
The 9 UN classes
- Class 1: Explosives
- Class 2: Gas
- Class 3: Flammable liquids
- Class 4: Flammable solids
- Class 5: Oxidizers and peroxides
- Class 6: Toxic and infectious materials
- Class 7: Radioactive materials
- Class 8: Corrosive materials
- Class 9: Miscellaneous materials and objects (lithium batteries, etc.)
Regulations by mode of transport
- ADR: European agreement relating to the international transport of dangerous goods by road
- IMDG: International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code
- IATA DGR: Regulations of the International Air Transport Association
- RID: Regulations concerning international rail transport
Obligations of the sender
Correctly classify the goods (UN number), package according to the required standards, label and mark the packages, prepare the transport document with the regulatory information and train the staff (ADR safety advisor mandatory).
Customs control
Customs checks the transport of dangerous goods for compliance. A failure to declare or document may result in the blocking of the goods and criminal sanctions.
