Preferential origin
Preferential origin allows goods to benefit from reduced or zero customs duties under trade agreements between the EU and third countries.
Conditions of obtaining
To benefit from preferential origin, a good must meet the specific rules of origin of the agreement concerned. These rules define the degree of transformation sufficient to confer origin.
Common criteria
- Fully obtained: product entirely grown, extracted or manufactured domestically
- Sufficient transformation: change of tariff position, minimum added value, specific transformation operation
- Cumulative: possibility of using materials originating from partner countries
Proofs of origin
Depending on the agreement, proof of origin may be an EUR.1 certificate, an invoice declaration of origin, a REX certificate of origin or an EUR-MED certificate.
Financial impact
Using preferential origin can generate considerable savings on customs duties, ranging from a few percent to zero duty.
