AN ENERGY DISPERSIVE SPECTROSCOPY (EDS) X-RAY MICROANALYSIS SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM COMPRISES OF AN X-RAY DETECTOR, WHICH DETECTS AND CONVERTS X-RAYS INTO ELECTRONIC SIGNALS, A PULSE PROCESSOR THAT MEASURES THE ELECTRONIC SIGNALS TO DETERMINE THE ENERGY OF EACH X-RAY DETECTED, AND AN ANALYZER THAT DISPLAYS AND INTERPRETS THE X-RAY DATA. THE SYSTEM IS USED WITH SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (SEM), TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (TEM) OR FOCUSSED ION BEAM (FIB). THE EDS DETECTOR CONVERTS THE ENERGY OF A SINGLE X-RAY PHOTON INTO A STEP OF PROPORTIONAL SIZE ON A VOLTAGE RAMP USING A SEMICONDUCTOR CRYSTAL AND FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTOR (FET)-PREAMPLIFIER. THE SYSTEM DOES NOT GENERATE X-RAYS.
