IT FORMS PART OF A PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE (PEM) FOR FUEL CELL APPLICATIONS.
THE PROTON PERMEABLE IONOMER MEMBRANE ALLOWS THE PASSAGE OF PROTONS AND FORCES THE ELECTRONS AROUND A CONDUCTIVE PATH CREATING AN ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT.
THE CATALYST, AS AN ANODE, SPLITS THE MOLECULE INTO TWO PROTONS AND TWO ELECTRONS ALTERNATIVELY AND THE CATALYST, WHEN ACTING AS THE CATHODE, WILL CATALYSE THE FORMATION OF TWO OXYGEN IONS WHEN IT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH OXYGEN GAS TO FORM WATER. THE PLATINUM IS THE CATALYST AND SPEEDS UP THE REACTION OF OXYGEN AND HYDROGEN.
IT IS SUPPORTED ON THE CARBON IONOMER BACKING TO ENHANCE ITS FUNCTION AS AN ELECTRODE AND INCREASE THE SPEED OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL REACTIONS. THE USE OF A SUB-GASKET PROVIDES MECHANICAL SUPPORT FOR MEMBRANE ELECTRODE ASSEMBLY.
GAS DIFFUSION LAYERS (GDL) ARE USED AS PASSAGE FOR REACTANT TRANSPORT AND HEAT/WATER REMOVAL, MECHANICAL SUPPORT AND PROTECTION FROM CORROSION OR EROSION CAUSED BY FLOWS OR OTHER FACTORS.
