The Machinery Directive (being replaced by the Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 from 2027) harmonises safety and health requirements for the design, manufacture and placing on the market of machinery in the EU.
The regulation applies to:
- Machinery: assembly of mechanical parts, at least one of which is mobile, with a drive system
- Partly completed machinery: incomplete assemblies intended for incorporation into final machinery
- Interchangeable equipment: devices assembled by the user onto a base machine
- Safety components: devices serving a safety function
Essential safety requirements include:
- Risk assessment and reduction (standard EN ISO 12100)
- Protection against mechanical, electrical, thermal risks
- Ergonomics and ease of use
- Instructions in the language of the country of use
The new Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 introduces major changes: consideration of AI-related risks, cybersecurity, and the option to provide instructions in digital format.
