LCL — Less than Container Load (Maritime groupage)
LCL is a method of maritime shipping where goods from several shippers are grouped (consolidated) in a single container.
Operation
A freight forwarder or consolidator collects goods from different shippers, consolidates them in a container at the port of departure, and unconsolidates them at the port of destination for delivery to different recipients.
Advantages
Accessibility for small volumes (from 1 m³), no need to fill a full container, shipping flexibility.
Disadvantages
Longer lead times (consolidation and unbundling times), increased risks of damage linked to multiple handling, and unit cost per m³ higher than the FCL.
Pricing
LCL freight is billed by the paid unit (the greater of weight in tonnes and volume in m³, with 1 tonne = 1 m³).
