Customs Broker
The customs broker (or registered customs representative — RDE) is an approved professional who carries out customs clearance formalities on behalf of importers and exporters.
Types of representation
- Direct representation: the agent acts in the name and on behalf of the client. The customer remains the debtor of duties and taxes.
- Indirect representation: the agent acts in his own name but on behalf of the client. He is co-debtor of duties and taxes.

Establishment of customs declarations, tariff classification, determination of origin and value, management of licenses and authorizations, regulatory advice.
Approval
In France, since the reform of the CDU, the status of "approved customs broker" has been replaced by that of "registered customs representative" (RDE), which is subject to registration conditions.
Responsibility
The commission agent assumes professional responsibility for the accuracy of the declarations. Professional liability insurance is essential.
