Stuffing and unloading
Stuffing is the operation of loading goods into a container. **stripping/unstuffing” is the reverse operation of unloading.
Potting location
Stuffing can be done at the shipper's premises (in FCL), in a freight forwarder's consolidation warehouse (in LCL) or at a port terminal. The place of stuffing has legal importance because it can determine the point of transfer of risk according to Incoterm.
Responsibilities
The potter is responsible for the proper distribution of loads in the container, the bracing and securing of the goods, compliance with weight limits and checking the good condition of the container before loading.
Potting plan
For LCL or multi-reference shipments, a detailed stuffing plan is recommended. It facilitates unloading and checking at destination.
VGM (Verified Gross Mass)
Since the amended SOLAS convention (2016), the verified gross weight of each packed container must be communicated before loading onto the ship. This is the responsibility of the shipper.
Customs issue
The packing certificate may be required by customs, in particular to verify that the container has not been opened or altered between packing and customs clearance. The seal number is shown on the bill of lading.
